Writing dates and time

Do you know the difference between en dash (–) and hyphen (-)? Read all about them in the bullets below. Also, note when, and when not to, use space.

    Rules

    • Write "May 31–June 5" with an en dash, not a hyphen, and no space. Don't write "May 31 - June 5". Keep in mind that if a number or date range is introduced with from, the word to should be used instead of an en dash to keep the construction parallel. Similarly, when a range is introduced with between, the word and should be used. Learn more about en dash.
    • Always write which time zone is meant. Primarily we express time in CET/CEST, sometimes with the addition of EST/EDT.
    • Use the 24-hour system to express time in CEST/EST, i.e. 14:30 or 14:30–15:00. Use the en dash and not a hyphen. Learn more about writing time. Learn more about en dash.
    • Use a.m. and p.m. to express time in CET/EDT, i.e. 2:30 p.m or 2:30 p.m.–3:00 p.m. Use the en dash and not a hyphen. Learn more about writing time. Learn more about en dash.
