Tipping points occur not only in undesirable processes, but also in desirable contexts. Whilst human activities are pushing the planet towards negative tipping points, jeopardising the very foundations of human well-being on earth, there exists viable solutions that could keep the world on track – provided there's robust support in policy, finance, and leadership for swift global implementation.
Together with business leaders, policymakers and scientists we'll explore the positive tipping points on the horizon or already achieved, delving into the success factors driving these transformative moments.
As the world grapples with the urgent and complex issue of climate change, the role of sustainable leadership has never been more critical. This panel discussion will bring together thought leaders, experts, and practitioners in the field of sustainability to explore the intersection of leadership and rapid climate action.
The Breakthrough Agenda report 2023 concludes that even if the transition to clean energy and sustainable solutions is accelerating, global emissions are still increasing and there is a need now to deploy near zero emission technologies at scale. For steel this means that we need 70 near zero emission steel plants by 2030. What is needed to get projects off the ground and how can value-chain collaboration and policy measures support this needed acceleration?
The session will discuss how growth, emissions reductions and economic empowerment can go hand in hand, and how successful partnerships and strategic alliances between local business communities in Sweden, the EU and globally are the main drivers of all three.
To achieve net zero supply chains by 2030-2050, the MASSIV+ partnership explores a cross-industry standard for turning greenhouse gas emissions data into actionable information – and thereby reduce negative impact. The purpose is to enable seamless collection and validation of greenhouse gas emission data from Scope 1 and 2 – in order to secure Scope 3 across supply chains. We will share our lessons learned from collaborating around developing a prototype that acts within the decarbonization data reporting area – driving transparency, standards and speed.
What is the future of scope 3 emissions? We often speak to the challenges that enterprises are navigating to deliver the transition towards net zero, and seize the opportunities that lie therein. In this panel, you will hear about the solutions. How enabling technology will provide seamless exchange of carbon data.
How could global food systems better sustain our planet and its people by 2040? The urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve ecological conditions to sustain the planet and its growing population by 2040 is the focus of a panel discussion based on Tetra Pak's white paper. The discussion will address three critical issues and five key objectives for a more sustainable future. Stakeholders from various sectors will explore the reconfiguration of global food systems to align with ecological, social, and economic imperatives, including private sector engagement and Tetra Pak's pathways for change.

As the world grapples with the dire consequences of climate change, the imperative for transitioning to clean energy sources has become increasingly apparent. This presentation delves into the critical reasons why the adoption of clean energy is not just an option but an urgent necessity for the planet's sustainable future. Additionally, it will provide a global outlook and stocktake over the diverse conditions and challenges faced by different regions worldwide in the ongoing energy transition.
To speed up industry transition and bridge the gaps to meet the Paris agreement’s goals, we need to set a clear, global framework to unlock the necessary deployment of clean energy technologies. Clean energy is the backbone of the transition to net-zero. New production capacity but also more transmission grids are necessary. What are the challenges and recommendations to get there?
A seminar at the forefront of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). The EU and many private sector companies will rely on permanent carbon removals to meet their net-zero targets. Given the growing importance of these permanent removals, several key initiatives are moving forward within the EU, including the establishment of a framework for carbon credits and the development of a strategy for industrial carbon management. Tidal energy is predictable and has the potential to balance the global energy system, complementing the intermittency of wind and solar. Minesto’s ocean energy kites are demonstrated in the Faroe Islands, a nation with one of the most ambitious transition schemes in the world, aiming to become 100% renewable by 2030. The technology is also applicable along Norway’s coastline. A cooperation between Sweden, Faroe Islands, Denmark and Norway could realize a new industry of ocean energy, and be a lighthouse project for ocean economies around the world. Minesto invites for a dialogue on how such cooperation could be reality, proposing a 200 MW buildout roadmap of tidal energy kite parks underwater.

The transition away from fossil fuels is an imperative to limit global warming close to 1.5°C. Given the pressing need to phase out fossil fuels, companies have a crucial role to rapidly phase out fossil fuels from their value chains, to put positive pressure on governments, and send a clear signal that we have entered “the beginning of the end” of the fossil era. This session, complementing the Fossil to Clean campaign and the Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty, will showcase examples of companies that have committed to map fossil fuels in their value chains and are taking concrete steps to eliminate these emissions. By sharing their experiences and best practices, these companies demonstrate that this transition is not only achievable but is also desirable from a competitive viewpoint.

This side event at the Conference of Parties 28 aims to highlight the pivotal role of youth in Africa and Europe in advancing the Energy Transition and Climate Justice.
This panel will explore how different stakeholders (government, technology developers and society) might respond to the challenge of achieving global net-zero emissions and what the uncertainties are.
The global energy transition is already underway, but the urgency of climate change demands that it reaches a larger scale and a higher pace. Carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement can help provide the finance and capacity needed to accomplish that.
Viable Cities and the European Commission’s representation in Sweden in partnership with Sweden’s pavilion at COP28 are pleased to invite you to the sixth European Viable Cities Day on December 8, 2023 – a bridge between the Swedish and European efforts towards the mission of climate neutral and sustainable cities by 2030. With seven years to go to reach the mission of climate neutral cities, action is needed now. Radical implementation is of the essence. The movement to accelerate the climate transition and pave the way for many others is growing and gaining momentum. At European Viable Cities Day, 23 Swedish cities representing 40% of the Swedish population, six government agencies and high level representatives from business and academia gathers to make this happen. This year, Stockholm and Madrid have received the official EU Mission Label as the first two European capitals. During the event, there will be a special ceremony to highlight this achievement, as well as the signing ceremony of the Swedish Climate City Contracts. Viable Cities is a Swedish national innovation platform and Sweden's biggest initiative for Climate Neutral Cities, jointly funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, Vinnova and Formas.

The world’s 500 million small-hold farms produce one-third of our global food and employ up to two billion people, making them crucial stakeholders in food production systems. Small-hold farmers can be Impact Generators. But they lack access to innovative technologies to adapt to climate resilient farming.
How to supply food to 10 billion people living on the planet is the theme and here we will invite innovators, entrepreneurs, enterprises to be part in solving the quest.
Food systems commitments form an integral part of a comprehensive global response to climate change, ensuring a resilient and nourished future for all.
Technology and innovation are key accelerators towards reshaping the food ecosystem. To build future-fit food systems, capable of meeting the challenges of a growing global population, they are not merely desirable but imperative.
