Dr Mark Hayden is a Paediatric Cardiac Intensivist at Great Ormond St Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London. GOSH was founded in 1852 and was the first hospital in England to provide in-patient beds specifically for children. Mark saw an opportunity when Epic’s EMR was installed in 2018 to refocus the way GOSH clinicians interact with patient data. In addition to several Epic clinical “firsts”, he also explored the opportunities to display pertinent environmental data to clinicians. A display of local air pollution data in each patient’s chart went live in 2022 and has since been replicated in several other large hospitals in London. The Guardian, The Times and the BBC have all reported on this innovation. This simple intervention is readily replicable in Epic and other electronic medical records, and he is working with hospitals in Europe and the US to do so. He believes that it is part of his role to preserve a healthy planet for his patients and sees clearing the air as a great way to do so. He often explores the opportunities for health care workers to collaborate on clean air, preferably while cycling, but no longer while flying.
