2:45 PM EDT / 20:45 CEST — Reinventing Your Value Chain – Practical Examples And Needs For Success

The magnitude of the needed transformation is becoming clearer, for companies, policymakers and research. Many companies are working hard, both in practice and to get the support needed to reinvent their value chains in order to ensure they can fully transition into the net zero operating space. We need to change how we work, how we think, and what we aim for when it comes to reductions, but in some cases, we need a complete transformation of what a value chain may look like as well as the actors, products and services that are in the midst of these value chains.

In this session, we will hear practical examples of how companies are transforming their value chains, and what is needed to be able to do so.

Speakers:

  • Louise Rehbinder, Director, Exponential Roadmap Initiative
  • Sriram Rajagopal, Head of Climate and Air Pollution, Inter IKEA Group
  • Jennie Cato, SVP Global Head of Public Affairs & Partnerships, Scania

3:30 PM EDT / 21:30 CEST — Scaling Up Carbon Removals From Today Towards Net Zero

Every organisation committed to reaching net zero must inevitably set a carbon removal strategy for counter-balancing residual emissions. Carbon removals are essential for meeting climate targets and will significantly impact how a company's climate ambition and performance are evaluated.

This session will delve into how carbon removals can be integrated into a company's climate strategy, to ensure a transparent, credible and effective transition to net zero. By combining removals with deep value chain reductions and wider contributions to societal change and nature restoration, companies can demonstrate a comprehensive approach to achieving their sustainability goals.

  • Claire Wigg, Head of Climate Performance, Exponential Roadmap Initiative
  • Gabrielle Walker, Co-Founder & Chief Scientist, CUR8 & Executive Chair, Rethinking Removals

Speakers:

  • Martina Otto, Head of CCAC Secretariat, UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition

3:30 AM EDT / 9:30 CEST — Can Climate Communication Overcome the Bad News Problem?

Climate change is real, and is widely perceived as the most serious threat to the world’s future. Climate change needs to be reported, made visible and discussed to drive and inspire us to taking action. But how can we talk about such an alarming subject, that seems to be growing steadily worse, without the “bad news syndrome” – people walking away because the news is simply too depressing – kicking in? Can we address the severity of the crisis while remaining hopeful about the future?  Can we increase the public’s interest and appetite for climate news, while overcoming misinformation?

We’re bringing together media, scientists, NGOs, and representatives from politics and business to share and discuss their insights into these issues. We’ll do that in the political heart of Europe: Brussels, where climate policies are drafted that affect us all.

Join us for a special interactive hybrid event that will be broadcast from Brussels’ historical Bibliothèque Solvay on Tuesday 24 September 2024. Register to be a part of the interactive audience in this event.

3:30 AM EDT / 9:30 CEST — Introduction by Åsa Jamal, Vattenfall

3:45 AM EDT / 9:45 CEST — Can we be balanced about climate change?

Various research findings confirm that how we discuss climate change matters. The words we choose in reporting the issues and in climate change policies themselves can make a significant difference. Meanwhile, navigating between neutrality and activism is becoming difficult for mainstream media. Will climate change alter the industry’s operating assumptions?

5:45 AM EDT / 11:45 CEST — Can we grow the publics for climate change news?

Over the past years, traditional media have been hit hard. Overall trust and viewership for news is continuing its downward trend. Up to 40 percent of the audiences that have left tend to avoid news, because they find it too depressing. Who and where are the audiences for climate change news?

8:45 AM EDT / 14:45 CEST — Whose facts matter in the climate change story?

‘Facts’ are now more disputed than ever. Whose facts are legitimate, and to whom has become a matter of faith. In practical terms: what constitutes "proof" for the publics of climate change communication?

9:45 AM EDT / 15:45 CEST —  Collective session & wrap-up

In addition to several Epic clinical “firsts”, he also explored the opportunities to display pertinent environmental data to clinicians. A display of local air pollution data in each patient’s chart went live in 2022 and has since been replicated in several other large hospitals in London. The Guardian, The Times and the BBC have all reported on this innovation. This simple intervention is readily replicable in Epic and other electronic medical records, and he is working with hospitals in Europe and the US to do so. He believes that it is part of his role to preserve a healthy planet for his patients and sees clearing the air as a great way to do so. He often explores the opportunities for health care workers to collaborate on clean air, preferably while cycling, but no longer while flying.

Mark Hayden, MD

 (

Paediatric Cardiac Intensivist, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children

Dr Mark Hayden is a Paediatric Cardiac Intensivist at Great Ormond St Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London. GOSH was founded in 1852 and was the first hospital in England to provide in-patient beds specifically for children. Mark saw an opportunity when Epic’s EMR was installed in 2018 to refocus the way GOSH clinicians interact with patient data.
